The house and its history
San Stefano is a Venetian farmhouse built in 1782 on a rock commanding a spectacular view over the Corfu Channel to the mainland opposite. For many generations it has been in the Flamburiari, and subsequently the Manessi families, who wanted a country house where they could relax and escape the pressures of town, just like today's visitors. They built a balcony along the front of the house, where you can sit and watch the sunrise over the hills of Epirus and the ever changing light on the sea, with the bell-tower of the family’s private chapel in the foreground. San Stefano was a self-contained community, living off the produce of the estate, but it has also played host to Kaiser Wilhem 2nd, Russian nuns seeking a retreat (led by an aunt of the last tsar), doctors and nurses of the First World War, 18th century monks (some buried in the chapel), and more recently Corfu-loving visitors such as Gerald Durrell and Vivien Leigh.
Accommodation
The house is large and comfortable rather than grand, filled with light and opening out on to the wide balcony with its spectacular sea view. The cool spacious rooms contain mementoes of San Stefano’s history, reflecting not only the Venetian influence, but the time the family spent in India at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, their love of things English, and pride in their Greek heritage. It is not a museum however, but a family home, unobtrusively modernised to make it comfortable for 21st century living.
